A call to action: HP fans against genocide in Darfur
A call to action: HP fans against genocide in Darfur As many of you know or have read, Darfur, in the Sudan region of Africa, is currently under a horrendous regime of genocide and brutality. It's allowed to continue for many reasons, a chief one among them being the willingness of leaders to do nothing about it. That's where Harry Potter fans come in.

As we approach the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and fans around the world come together to celebrate, fans are yet again teaming up to make a difference. We're asking you to join in the effort today. The Harry Potter Alliance is an unofficial group that encourages fans to use the messages in the Harry Potter books to help make a difference in the world. And now there's a concrete way to do just that. Through the Harry Potter Alliance, Harry Potter webmasters are helping fans educate, inform and act to end the suffering.
As many of you know or have read, Darfur, in the Sudan region of Africa, is currently under a horrendous regime of genocide and brutality. It's allowed to continue for many reasons, a chief one among them being the willingness of leaders to do nothing about it. That's where Harry Potter fans come in.

Many Harry Potter webmasters have spoken out about this before. MuggleCast's Laura Thompson runs Operation Sudan, which has raised thousands to aid the region. Veritaserum.com's founder, Matthew Vines, a teenager, has successfully advocated in his local area to divert more than $38 million from the corrupt regime, an act of tenacity that has probably saved thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of lives.

And now there's a concrete way to do just that. Through the Harry Potter Alliance, Harry Potter webmasters are helping fans educate, inform and act to end the suffering.

Shortly we will be putting out a special podcast, released through PotterCast's feed, that will feature interviews with world leaders on this subject, including leading human rights activist John Prenderdergast, and retired diplomat Joseph C. Wilson (author of The Politics of Truth: Inside the Lies that Led to War and Betrayed My Wife's CIA Identity: A Diplomat's Memoir).

It will feature appearances by wizard rock bands Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, The Remus Lupins, and more. Matthew Vines will be talking about his experiences fighting injustice in the Sudan. It will explain what's happening and what you can do about it, and we're very excited to bring it to you. Each uncut interview will also appear online later, if you would like to hear more.

We also have information for you about how to get involved right now, by having or attending a house party leading to DH. At these house parties, themed around Harry and the messages of love and hope within them, there are several activities you and your friends can take part in to help raise awareness and have fun while doing it. They range from lighting a candle, to sending an email, to writing a letter, to calling special awareness hotlines.

You can read all about these efforts and what you can do to help out here. For more information about the house parties, visit this page.

We will have much more about this in the coming days. In the meantime if you would like to join the effort, host a house party, or simply send messages of support, please contact Jenn at jenn@thehpalliance.org or visit the Harry Potter Alliance web site and MySpace.

i like the songs by harry and the potters on the myspace

Posted by Let_it_be001 Jul 10th 2007

I am glad you are doing this, but I am mad that you are using Harry Potter and using it's audiance to make your message. Say it as you not as a Harry Potter fan. You are using your powers as an excuse to make a statement and that is wrong. It's exactly like a celevrity, which is everything I hate about them. This by far makes me angry. This is the first time I think I have been mad about something that has been posted on MuggleNet. Feel free to reply if you wish : Rocknroller554@Aol.com

i am truly proud to be a part of a fandom that cares so much for everything! My highschool and i have been trying to raise awareness about the genocide in darfur for a while now. We even sold shirts saying "stop genocide" on the front, and on the back "Save darfur!" (all the proceeds went to darfur). We even wrote a letter to our congressman, asking him to bring it up in the senate. We truly believe that one act can make a difference. I am very happy that you guys posted this because this is such a big fansite and it will spread the word everywhere. Another part of what our school did was take a survey asking people if they knew what darfur was, 80% of the people we surveyed had no clue! i couldn't believe it! I am just shocked at how little people know of this! This is just like Rwanda, and even the holocaust! we thought we put an end to genocide during the holocaust, it just goes to show that history does repeat itself and the only way to stop it from repeating itself is to gain knowledge and understanding of past events! ok, rant over, and please if anyone reads this comment, HELP SAVE DARFUR, STOP GENOCIDE!

Posted by HPUS Jul 10th 2007

Omg i am totally speechless... look at wat Jo has done for this world she should definately be like a world leader or something like that. I bet laura Mallroy(im not sure this is the right speeling!!!) is killing herself over this!!!!

Posted by hpintwense06 Jul 10th 2007

I think this is a great thing! It is really sad to hear about what is happening over there and it's awesome that Harry Potter has a large enough fan base to spread the message and make a difference.

Posted by Serinity Jul 10th 2007

That's really great! I never knew Laura ran Operation Sudan, that's awesome! Go Laura!!

Posted by SnapeIsHawt Jul 10th 2007

I'd definately pay to see the look on that woman's face who's trying to ban the Harry Potter books from the library. Promotes witchcraft? My ***. I'm so glad MuggleNet is going ahead with this. Millions of fans visit this site each day and this is so going to spread the word much more quicker. Now every single Harry Potter fan can put their learnings into action and help make the world a better place. :) Thank you, MuggleNet.

Posted by Nimbuschick Jul 10th 2007

We all jump up and down to support this, but darn the US for going to Iraq. Genocide is bad. I think we all agree to that. I, of course, support this movement. I think we all need to be more globally aware.

Posted by gas2010 Jul 10th 2007

I love the darfur cause but these people also support shutting dow wal mart because they dont give employees good benifits so what no one forced them to work there

Posted by ginnyweasleypotter Jul 10th 2007

I think that this is one of the best things the Harry potter fandom could do. I will try my best to help out. I think that the cleverest thing is calling the hotline repeatedly. We could all just go, Bother bother bother bother, like the puppet Pals!!! We will fight the Voldemorts in the Muggle world through knowledge and a billion people telling them what they should already know!! Kudos to Mugglenet!!!!!

Posted by tor Jul 10th 2007

This is GREAT!!!!!!! I am extremely proud of the HP fans for their awareness on subjects such as this. Keep it up!

Posted by lilyhpfan23 Jul 10th 2007

I am glad that someone is doing something about the terrible situation. I learned about this at school and was shocked!! When I told people about it they had no idea this was going on. If you google the genocide in Sudan, you will find A LOT of shocking stuff about it. I am sure that all Harry Potter fans can do something about this. THANKS FOR BRINGING ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE!!!!

Posted by Mitchy Jul 10th 2007

Hey. I think this is a great idea. I've spend most of 2006-2007 rounding up students in my school to help with the crisis in Darfur... I am so glad the HP community is getting involved!

Posted by NaturaLight Jul 10th 2007

ELEVEN WAYS TO “SAVE DARFUR†1) Join a "Save Darfur" Facebook Group I assure you that Victims of genocide truly appreciate you sitting in your college dorm room, clicking away. 2) Purchase a "Save Darfur" T-shirt This is absolutely essential to stop the killing. The genocide will not stop until you buy the T-Shirt. 3) Purchase a "Save Darfur" Bumper Sticker Feeling guilty about driving that brand new Lexus mom and dad bought you to school every day while Ikembe and his family slowly die of starvation? Slap on a Save Darfur bumper sticker. What better way to relieve your guilt trip? (Alternative places for use: College lecture hall bathroom stalls and guitar cases) 4) Put "Save Darfur" in your AIM Profile Studies show that the use of this phrase in the AIM profiles of privileged American youth is directly proportional to the amount of innocent lives saved in the Sudan. 5) End the Iraq War Prematurely to Shift Focus This way, we can create another genocide. This does pose some problems, however. Our grassroots constituency would have to decide if "Save Iraq" should go before or after "Save Darfur" in our AIM profiles. 6) Hold a "Save Darfur" Sign If enough signs are positioned towards the sun simultaneously we can stop the crisis in the Sudan AND reverse the impact of global warming. 7) Blame America Mass genocide in Africa is YOUR fault. And don’t you forget it. 8) Call Your Senators and Demand the Use of Military Force For our own protection, I assure you. It was recently proven that the Darfur crisis poses an imminent threat to our national security. The Janjaweed have successfully engineered a thirteen ton nuclear bomb from camel spit and sand. And we turn a blind eye. 9) Blame President Bush If only he could forget about his "fictional" war on terror so we could focus on the true threat to Western civilization. Al-Qaeda al schmieda. 10) Know Nothing About the Darfur Crisis Other Than "People are Dying" Don't waste your ti...

wow, i didn't expect emerson to post about that. the hp alliance is gonna be at my dh party, so cool!

Posted by Bagpiper Jul 10th 2007

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention, Mugglenet. I find it insanely depressing that there are more comments for the Order of the Phoenix post prior to this one than there are on this important issue. :(

Posted by skittley2222 Jul 10th 2007

I think this is great! So many people visit this site all the time and they're going to see this and want to help! Harry Potter really inspires me to be the best person I can be and you, Mugglenet have showed me a way I can be =] That makes me really, really happy. JKR created such a good atmosphere with her work and I love that all the HP fans care. And Let_it_be001 why can't they say it as a HP fan? That makes me mad that you think that using the HP thing is wrong. At least it's getting the message out there! Would you rather NOTHING be done? Hp fans are already united so why not do something about the stuff going on in our world? Anyway...thanks for bringing the situation to our attention, Mugglenet

Posted by yuleball12 Jul 10th 2007

i am so glad that hp fans can support this genoside. Along with the genocide in Rwanda, we also learned about that in Darfur. It is a topic in which people need to take a stand, and mugglenet is doing just that. I support this movement!

Posted by marykate896 Jul 10th 2007

Yay Mugglenet for supporting such a great cause. Save Darfur! GO HP!

Posted by omgharrypotter Jul 10th 2007

wow, who knew harry potter could save people from genocide and brutality? [:

Posted by VLDMRT Jul 10th 2007

I JUST PRINTED OUT A 38 PAGE GUIDE TO STARTING A HIGH SCHOOL CLUB FOR "STAND". I AM GOING TO DO ALL I CAN TO STOP THIS. I NEVER REALLY NOTICED HOW HARRY POTTER RELATES SO MUCH WITH OUR MUGGLE COMMUNITY! LET'S ALL HELP DANFUR!

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Jul 10th 2007

HORAAH FOR MUGGLENET!!! I WOULD TOTALLY LOVE TO HELP OUT THE PEOPLE IN DARFUR ALL THROUGHT HARRY POTTER TOO!! AHMAZING WHAT POEPLE CAN DO THE HELP SAVE THE WORLD!! YAY TO US YAY TO HP FANS ALL OVER!!

Posted by Let_it_be001 Jul 10th 2007

Politics should not be mixed with Harry Potter.. I am highly against this.

Posted by _elise Jul 10th 2007

I never realized how much Harry Potter relates to real life; using Harry Potter to get people more motivated to help the cause is a fantastic idea. I don't understand how you could be highly against this, Let_it_be001. It's for the benefit of all those suffering in Sudan.

Posted by HpAlwaysN4ever Jul 10th 2007

Mugglenet, you are amazing. It is so great how you are doing this. It will get a lot of HP fans, including myself, involved.

Posted by melissanc09 Jul 10th 2007

let_it_be001- how can you be against this? helping other people is highly rewarding in a personal way. who cares if its a harry potter web site? it has tons of hits each day, so it can spread the word!
